  21. is posted to comp.sys.sgi.misc and to the news.answers and comp.answers
  22. newsgroups (whose purpose is to store FAQs) twice per month.  If you
  23. can't find one of the FAQs with your news program, you can get it by
  24. anonymous FTP from one of these sites:

  33. word 'help' on a line by itself in the text, and it will send you a
  34. document describing how to get files from rtfm.mit.edu by mail. Send the
  35. command 'send usenet/news.answers/sgi/faq/misc' to get the SGI misc FAQ,
  36. and similarly for the other FAQs. Finally, the FAQs are on the World

  78.   - The FAQs follow the RFC1153 recommendations for message digests and
  79.     thus can be viewed easily with newsreaders that understand message
  80.     digests.
  81.  
  82.   - Each question has a Subject: line, so you can easily step through
  83.     the answers with rn's ^G command.
  84.  
  85.   - Each question is marked with a "dash number dash" so that you can
  86.     find any answer with a simple search pattern.
  87.  
  88.   - Questions marked with a '+' in the subject line are new this
  89.     posting; those marked with a '!' have significant new content since
  90.     the last posting. Similarly, '+' and '!' in the left margin mark
  91.     added or changed text. Questions marked with a '-' in the subject
  92.     line will be removed in the next edition or so unless someone
  93.     convinces us otherwise.

  95.   - Don't forget about text searching!  There's an excellent chance the
  96.     information you want is in the FAQs, but not obvious from the table
  97.     of contents.  Every file viewer, editor and WWW browser has a way of
  98.     finding arbitrary text in a file.

  114.   You can view them with any World Wide Web browser, probably Mosaic
  115.   (which you can get from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu:/Web/Mosaic/), or, for text
  116.   terminals, Lynx (at ftp2.cc.ukans.edu:/pub/WWW/lynx/).

  118.   Some types of references in the SGI FAQs are in particular formats so
  119.   they will be recognized and turned into links to other documents:
  120.  
  121.   - References to FTP sites are in rcp(1)-like format
  122.     ('site:/path/file'). If you're not using a WWW browser, just do 'ftp
  123.     site', 'cd /path' and 'get file' as usual to get a file.  References
  124.     to directories end with slashes so you know what you're getting
  125.     into.  References to root directories (e.g. 'ftp.uu.net:/') do not
  126.     work; this is a known bug.  Some FTP servers are not
  127.     Mosaic-compatible; just use 'ftp'.
  128.  
  129.   - Other Internet services are in URL format
  130.     ('protocol://site/path/file'). If you're reading the SGI FAQs as
  131.     plain text, you can still paste URLs into your browser.
  132.  
  133.   - Manpages look like 'foo(1)' and Internet RFCs look like 'RFC####'.
  134.     Beware: Tom Fine is a Sun person, so the manpages are for SunOS.

  138. Subject:    -3- With what version(s) of IRIX do the SGI FAQs deal?

  141.   Unless otherwise specified, the FAQs discuss IRIX 5.2. A few entries
  142.   deal with IRIX 3.x and many deal with IRIX 4.0.5, and they should all
  143.   say so. Versions of IRIX 4 before 4.0.5 and IRIX 5 before 5.2 are
  144.   rarely discussed because everyone should have upgraded by now. The
  145.   FAQs do not discuss IRIX 6.0 yet at all.

  152.   Entries in the FAQs should be relatively short and genuinely
  153.   "frequently asked". Some material which is of less general interest or
  154.   which is too long is archived at viz.tamu.edu:/pub/sgi/. If
  155.   information you're looking for isn't in the FAQs, look there.  The
  156.   FAQs may direct you there as well.  You can submit material to that
  157.   archive just as you can an FAQ: mail it to sgi-faq@viz.tamu.edu, or
  158.   put it in viz.tamu.edu:/incoming/ and let us know by mail. If you have
  159.   a lot, perhaps it should be its own FAQ. If you like we can post your
  160.   SGI-related FAQ for you.

  195.   The SGI newsgroups are archived in their entirety, albeit in a
  196.   difficult-to-handle form, in ftp.sgi.com:/comp.sys.sgi/.
  197.   comp.sys.mips is likewise archived in ftp.sgi.com:/comp.sys.mips/.

  199.   Harry Mangalam <mangalam@uci.edu> makes the same newsgroups available,
  200.   and easily searchable, via WAIS.  There is a separate WAIS source for
  201.   each of the current SGI newsgroups and comp.sys.mips as well as the
  202.   defunct newsgroup comp.sys.sgi. If you're familiar with WAIS, just
  203.   search the directory-of-servers for "sgi" or "mips" to get all the
  204.   source descriptions. If you use a WAIS-capable WWW browser (Mosaic and
  205.   Lynx can be compiled with direct WAIS support, but Netscape requires
  206.   one to use a WAIS-aware httpd proxy), open the URL
  207.   'wais://hornet.mmg.uci.edu/comp.sys.sgi.misc' to search
  208.   comp.sys.sgi.misc, and similarly for the other archived newsgroups.

  210.   Thanks to these services, just posting something goes a long way
  211.   toward making it available to everyone, even after it expires.

  584.   5.3 in the next several months; it will then become the current

  606.   service which can be purchased from SGI.

  613.   It depends on what you're complaining about. Most of the SGI
  614.   employees who read the SGI newsgroups are engineers and similar
  615.   useful people, not evil marketing policy-setters. If you feel, for
  616.   example, that NFS or Documenter's Workbench should be a standard part
  617.   of IRIX, don't post; call your sales rep and yell at them.
  618.  
  619.   However, software bugs are better newsgroup material: an SGI person
  620.   may well see your message and fix the bug then and there.
  621.   Nonetheless, don't depend on it. Call the TAC and tell them too.

  630.   question might be worth discussing. That nonwithstanding, Next
  631.   zealots have flogged Nextstep around the SGI newsgroups many times.
  632.   They haven't convinced the command-line diehards that the Next way is
  633.   better or vice versa. Please don't try it yourself.

  646.   MTI, aka MIPS, an SGI subsidiary, does make NT-compatible machines.
